American Beethoven Society's Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Creative Scholarship (2007): Owen Jander, Wellesley College

Article excerpt

AT THE SECOND BIENNIAL CONVENTION of The American Beethoven Society co-sponsored with The Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San José State University, the Society and Center presented Dr. Owen Jander, emeritus faculty at Wellesley College, with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Creative Scholarship in Beethoven Studies on July 27, 2007. Over the past twenty-five years he has been engaged in research devoted to exploring the context of Beethoven's music in relation to the rhetorical principles, treatises and encyclopedias, and music criticism of his day; the meaning of the works in relation to the composer's biography; Beethoven iconography; and hermeneutic interpretations of the works in relation to classical mythology. Undoubtedly, his most influential and widely quoted study has been his 1985 analysis of the "Orpheus in Hades" middle movement of the Fourth Fortepiano Concerto, a subject he expands on in his forthcoming monograph from Pendragon Press devoted to all three movements. His scholarship has been characterized by a passion devoted to understanding the musk through the context of Beethoven's world and personal narrative. The Society and Center warmly congratulate Dr. Jander for his contributions to our understanding of Beethoven's music and life in the studies listed here.
