This book is based on the well-received German edition of 1992 and on a second revised edition of 2000 by Weidler in Berlin. It offers a comprehensive and thoroughly researched overview of German literary production within the Third Reich. Additionally, the book provides a chapter devoted to film between 1933 and 1945. Following a brief historical overview in chapter one, the author focuses on the ideological context of German literature produced within the Third Reich in chapter two and literature and cultural politics in chapter three. Subsequent chapters are devoted respectively to the genres of the national socialist novel, drama, and poetry. A chapter on non-national socialist and anti-national socialist literature during the Third Reich complements this broad study.

The author's goal, "to furnish an introduction to the literature within the Third Reich" (1), has been superbly accomplished. What makes this study especially valuable is the fact that Schoeps places the literary production within the Third Reich along a continuum with literature before 1933 and after 1945, thus reiterating the fact that there was no literary zero-hour, either before or after the Third Reich, and that many authors had written before or after the Nazi era. …
