Article excerpt

Starr Cookman and Kate Devore, Laryngeal Teaching Series. Volume 4: Compilation of Volumes 1-3. DVD, 36 minutes. www.LoveYourVoice.com $125.00 + $5.75 shipping and handling.

Voice and speech pathologists Starr Cookman and Kate Devore have created a new series of videos showing the larynx in action. The Laryngeal Teaching Series consists of film obtained using an endoscope. The first DVD, "Inside the Voice," demonstrates talking with different pitch and quality, as well as laughing, crying, and coughing. Volume 2 illustrates the techniques used by professional actors for shouting and screaming. Volume 3 demonstrates different styles of singing, including the operatic soprano and countertenor, classical mezzo soprano, belt, jazz, pop/rock, and even overtone singing. All of the volumes are available for purchase separately, or can be purchased in the compilation listed above.

These videos are notable for two reasons: they show a wide variety of tasks, and they offer extended clips of the same larynx. The total length of the DVD-even the complete footage found on Volume 4-does not exceed a normal class period. The series is useful to anyone who teaches the care and use of the voice.
