Randolph County Archives of Oral History

THE RANDOLPH COUNTY HERITAGE MUSEUM HAS ANNOUNCED the opening of a local oral history archives with a collection of 119 items created by students at Black River Technical College. Dr. Gary Buxton, an instructor in English at the college, collected interviews conducted by his students and others from a local community heritage course. The collection also includes interviews and research conducted by students of Steve Shultz, director of the Law Enforcement Training Academy and adjunct sociology instructor at Black River Technical College. A few items are interviews conducted by volunteers at the museum. Most items in the collection consist of a recorded interview and transcription, providing the researcher with both a hard copy and an example of the region's linguistic heritage.

Pocahontas, the seat of Randolph County, observed its sesquicentennial in 2006. During that year, the Randolph County Heritage Museum opened on the historic courthouse square in two locally significant buildings. The main building, constructed in 1909, originally housed Spinnenweber and Peters Mercantile; the annex, next door, was constructed the same year and was originally Jansen's Meat Market. The museum houses permanent and visiting exhibits interpreting the history of the county and has a program of educational activities. An archives area provides long-term storage for paper items. The Randolph County Archives of Oral History was established early on, before standard practices of acquisition and processing had yet been developed; consequently, an identification system distinguishes between oral history interviews and sociology interviews. …
