This volume constitutes the proceedings of a study-day held in the École des Chartes, Paris, in September 2005, whose aim was to explore national traditions in the methods of textual criticism applied to medieval texts and to identify recent developments in the field. Five national traditions are represented - German, English, Dutch, Italian, and French - plus medieval Latin, but minus Spanish, whose contributor preferred not to submit her paper for publication. The volume concerns itself exclusively with the editing of medieval literary, not administrative, material, the debate having been triggered by a desire to take stock after the arrival of the 'new philology" in the 19805, which subverted the idea of the author and the authentic, original text. …
