Stories about Irish saint Brendan of Clonfért's North Adantic voyage survive in a variety of forms and European languages. The Brendan Legend: Texts and Versions is a collection of papers read at the first International Brendan Conference in 2002 where Brendan scholars met to discuss 'the textual and literary transmission of medieval Brendan texts' (p. 4). The volume contains fourteen articles, arranged in alphabetical order after an introduction by Clara Strijbosch. The many manifestations of the story of Brendan's voyage have become specialized subjects in their own right; in this volume scholars leave their textual islands to explore outside influences on 'their' text. Not all contributions focus on intertextual aspects; the social or realistic background and the manuscript tradition of particular versions are also discussed. …
