In its own words, this Festschrift is bound together "by a single question, rich in ramifications: How does performance shape our understanding of medieval works, whether the nature of that performance is visual, linguistic, theatrical, musical, religious, didactic, socio-political, or editorial?' (p. xvi). It is divided into five sections, with a total of twenty-four articles of varying length. The first part, 'Poetic and musical performances', contains Michel Zink's piece (in French) on the blurred distinction between poésie and récit, lyric and narrative; Samuel N. Rosenberg using the exigencies of performance to discuss the lyrics of trouvère Colin Muset; Edward H. Roesner on the interplay of lyric, music, illustration, and mise en page in the manuscript of a French motet; and Jane Taylor discussing the composition and performance of fifteenth-century lyrics as a social and courtly practice. The second part, 'Performing sexual and social identities', sees Mark Cruse and E. Jane Burns each discussing finely worked objects as transmitters and containers of social and sexual meaning; Kimberlee Campbell and Sylvia Huot examine the negotiations of chivalric masculinity in the verse Tristan de Nanteuil and the prose Roman de Peneforest, respectively; Ardis Butterfield locates the Jeu de Rabin et Marion in a surprisingly problematic historical context; and Marilyn Lawrence questions the stability of the category of 'minstrel' in various Tristan narratives. …
