"The Map is not the Territory; the Word is not the thing it represents. Our sensations are not reality, but an abstraction from reality." So begins the Null-A Continuum, a sequel by John C. Wright to the The World of Null-A (the first major trade science fiction hardcover) and The Players of Null-A, which were written by science fiction writer A.E. Van Vogt.

To write the Null-A Continuum, Wright trained himself to write in the pulp style and manner of Van Vogt. And he has successfully pulled that off with intricate plot twists and lively prose that is worthy of his inspiration/mentor/influence. He has also successfully emulated Van Vogt's method of using GS-related quotations at the beginnings of chapters. These quotations, such as the one that begins this review, could form the basis of a beginning general semantics course.

Lots of people were first introduced to GS through Van Vogt's masterpiece The World on Non-A, which was published in book form in 1948 (and has been in print ever since). …
