This awards program was developed in 2000 with two purposes in mind: first, to recognize excellence in higher education and its resultant physical environment in higher education planning and design, and second, to educate planners and others about what constitutes excellence planningacademic, strategic and master planning-emphasizing the interconnectivity and importance of each one.

The link between education and awards programs is not always evident; however, SCUP supports and encourages emphasis on the educational aspect of its awards programs. The ability to explain why and how plans, facilities, additions, renovations, landscapes, and individuals are worthy of an award is key to providing clear lessons learned in planning. They are some of the best ways SCUP has to concretely show how the application of planning tools in the institution result in exemplary buildings, grounds, institutional success, and careers that inspire. Both the newcomer and the veteran need to hear these stories to grow and add value to their day-to-day lives-as well as build their abilities to assist educational institutions.

The awards program ferrets out these stories and draws attention towards ever-changing, new ideas and experiments. …
