Project Highlights

* Established framework for the inception and growth of a new campus on arid scrubland near Karachi, Pakistan

* Vision is to set a standard for education, responsible development, and civil society in the region and the world

* Project is about architecture, city planning, campus planning, and academic programming-growing a university and a town. An urban gesture firmly rooted in the culture of Islam and South Asia

* Campus is envisioned as an integrated network of courtyards, pedestrian streets, and buildings and verandas, reflecting on history, culture, and climate

* Plan applies materials, dimensions, and morphology to define a contemporary cosmopolitan project

* Establishes a benchmark for responsible development including social, cultural and economics aspects along with environmental of sustainability including solar shading, stormwater management, on-site sewage treatment, water calibration, solar hot water, and wind energy

* Spaces and structures of the campus recognize its place in the Muslim tradition

* The quality of campus-its materials and its patterns of adjacency and circulation-should sustain an academic community that not only researches and studies at high intensity, but lives and learns as a community of decency and optimism

Perspectives

It is often most desirable to create a plan rooted in the native culture, in this case, drawing inspiration from Arab and Persian learning of the early Muslim period in philosophy, medicine, mathematics, literature, and scholarship and combining it with an academic spirit from the restless inquiry and discovery that drive the modern age. …
