Approximately eighty percent of the land of the United States is rural; fifty percent of the public school districts are located in rural areas; and twenty percent of the students in the United States attend a rural public school. These are many of the interesting findings in the Status of Education in Rural America issued by the United States Department of Education in July 2007. 1 have taken the liberty to focus on selected highlights from the report.

* A large percentage of public school students in rural areas attend very small schools (fewer than 200 students).

* Fewer students in rural areas attend a preprimary program than the national average.

* A larger percentage of parents of students in rural public schools attend school events than parents of students who attend such events in city schools.

* The percentage of students in rural public schools scoring at or above proficient on the 4th and 8th grade NAEP is higher than the percentage of students in city schools, but lower than the percentage of students in suburban schools. …
