Carol Kimball's new collection titled Art Songs in English containing fifty songs by twenty-one American and British composers is a welcome addition to the catalog of publications that feature art songs in the English language. The 1970s saw some of the first publications in this area, thanks to the work of Bernard Taylor, and several volumes of art songs by American composers have been added in the last couple of decades. Kimball's selection of songs no doubt grew out of her extensive work in the field of art song in general (Song: A Guide to Style and Literature), and she has chosen an interesting array of composers, styles, and textual subject matter. Her excellent Preface details her criteria for selection: songs that are "singer friendly" and useful to teachers and students, songs that present a broad survey of twentieth-century song composers, and songs that present many different scenes and situations in their texts. In all cases, if the song is in a transposed key, the original key is given.

The British composers represented are Frank Bridge, Benjamin Britten, Rebecca Clarke, Gerald Finzi, Ivor Gurney, Michael Head, John Ireland, Roger Quilter, Arthur Somervell, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Peter Warlock. …
