Florida's Valencia Community College has recognized the importance of designing professional development opportunities that all faculty members can take advantage of. Acknowledging the difficulty many adjuncts and other part-time instructors have making time for conventional professional development activities, Valencia created a flexible scheme that offers all professional development programs in an online format.

At last May's National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development conference, Valencia officials endorsed their approach as an effective means of supporting non-enure-track instructors. Their program differs from others in two key ways: In addition to offering professional development programs that can accommodate adjuncts' schedules, the college pays a $33 per credit hour increase and awards the title "associate faculty" to adjuncts who have completed 60 hours of professional development. …
