British Columbia Library Association (BCLA) News

For the third year in a row the province of British Columbia proclaimed October Library month. According to a press release put out by B.C.'s Ministry of Education "The concept for a month dedicated to library and information services in British Columbia was developed by library partners from across the province to help raise public awareness about the fundamental role that libraries play in people's lives."

The 2009 BCLA annual conference will take place from April16 to April 18, 2009 at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel and the Holiday Inn Express Vancouver Metrotown in Burnaby. The conference theme this year is Be Curious?think, learn and discover: explore the possibilities of learning and teaching. Visit the conference website below for more information.

Library Association of Alberta (LAA) News

The LAA Election Kit has been updated to now address issues of advocating for libraries in Alberta. The new kit Advocacy: talk about libraries and influence the political process was revised by LAA's Advocacy Committee. According to their website "This document includes an overview of the structure of libraries in Alberta and the funding process for public libraries, as well as specific guidelines for writing effective letters and organizing a letter-writing campaign. It also contains a sample lobbying plan which you can adapt for your local situation." To view the document, visit the LAA website below and click on "Advocacy".

LAA is pleased to partner with the Writers Guild of Alberta and the Education Institute to offer Wired Writers: author talks with a twist.
