Kissman and Allen have created a brief book rich with insight into the complexities of single-parent family life. This is not a research-based book. It is not a text that has as its goal the description of the phenomenon of single-parent families. Because single-parent families do not constitute a homogeneous group, the aim of this volume is to delineate treatment issues germane to factors such as gender of the head of the single-parent household, ethnicity, age, and developmental stage, with an emphasis on social policies and services. An overriding theme throughout this book is the examination of intervention with single-parent families from a basis of feminist and "gender sensitive" principles. In addition, the authors describe other family-centered strategies that are designed to accentuate the strengths these families possess, mobilize supportive networks, and reframe experiences so as not to view them as deficits or the result of personal inadequacies.

Organizationally, the early chapters of the book focus on broad, philosophical and therapeutic approaches; the middle chapters address clinical practice with single-parent families; and the latter chapters focus on specific issues. These latter chapters examine issues related to support from family, partners and extrafamilial support, ethnic families, adolescent parents, single father-headed families, and noncustodial parenting. …
