Any reader of the Tristan en prose quickly becomes aware of the enormous numbers of people and places in the romance and of the correspondingly vast number of names, both personal names and toponyms, which are included in the work. Many of these names have, of course, been imported wholesale from the Prose Lancelot and elsewhere. The first of the four main sections of Florence Plet-Nicolas's book, 'Cerner le nom propre', offers a theoretical overview but one constantly and usefully related to the Prose Tristan itself. It shows, amongst other things, how familiar names can be reused or rewritten and a continuity with previous works established. A major theme of the whole study is announced here, namely that, through proper names, the world of Arthur and the world of Tristan become one and the same. The second section, La Quête du nom', is concerned with personal names and the way in which they are revealed or discovered. Situations are examined in which the name of a fellow knight is important and the pattern of exchanges that take place within them is considered in detail. Another strength of the work emerges clearly here: the author's consistent attempt to indicate those areas in which the Prose Tristan writer demonstrates an originality of approach. In the next section, Le Déchiffrage du nom', the author examines terms of address and the way in which such terms serve to allocate to the people involved a set place in society. …
