The papers in this collection were given in June 2000 at the Twelfth Colloquium of the Medieval Hispanic Research Seminar. The book opens with Andrew M Beresford's essay on the cultural significance of St Bernard of Clairvaux in early Hispanic literature. Two articles by José Julio Martin Romero, and José Manuel Fr ade jas Rueda, Isabel Acero Duran tez, and María Jesús Diez Gar retas explore aspects of transmission and intertextuality in the Roman de Troie and De regimine principum respectively. In the work of Tom Caldin ('Ideological subtexts in the Poema de mw Cid: the Afrenta de corpes as affront to male sufficiency') and Jan Gilbert CAlora,Abenámar, and orientalism'), modern theoretical approaches are applied to two classics of the medieval canon.
