This collection gathers together ten of the fourteen papers presented in June 2001 at the Thirteenth Colloquium of the Medieval Hispanic Research Seminar. As with previous volumes in the series, the book is better read as a cross-section of contemporary scholarship than as a discursively structured entity, and the choice of a comprehensive subject index over an introductory section reflects this functional approach. The book opens with two essays examining poetry. J. A. Abu-Haidar's article on Hispano-Arabie strophic verse looks at its possible relationship to the Provençal lyric, and Stephen Parkinson identifies approaches to metrical design in the Galician -Portuguese lyric. …
