British journalist and newscaster John Suchet is well-known for his Beethoven projects, including his novel The Last Master, his recent book The Friendly Guide to Beethoven, and his website, madaboutbeethoven. com. This latest publication consists of a series of two-page chapters on specific biographical or musical topics, attractively laid out among fine color reproductions of portraits, engravings of Vienna sites, and other pictures. This book is indeed a treasure trove, not only because it is a richly illustrated and thoughtfully written biography. Throughout the book are facsimile reproductions of about thirty original documents that can be removed from their pockets and examined more closely. The first contains copies of Beethoven's baptismal certificate from December 17, 1770, and the advertisement for his first public concert on March 26, 1778. In the last pocket readers will find a copy of the edict for the auction of Beethoven's musical estate on September 7, 1827, and a commemorative postcard for the anniversary festival held in Bonn one hundred years later. …
