Beethoven's associations with the Wegeler and Breuning families date from his youth in Bonn, so it is fitting that their remarkable family archives and collection of Beethoveniana would later reside at the Beethoven-Haus. Franz Gerhard Wegeler (1765-1848) was one of Beethoven's closest friends in Bonn, and during Wegeler's brief residency in Vienna from 1794-1796 the two resumed their acquaintance. After returning to Bonn, Wegeler married Eleonore Breuning (1771-1841), whose family had provided the young Beethoven with a surrogate home. The Wegeler and Breuning descendents preserved and expanded these family archives to include documents from their lives in Koblenz, such as letters and other autographs of Johannes Brahms. The entire collection contains about 400 items, with approximately two-thirds of those related to Beethoven. The introductory chapters of Friederike Grigat's fine catalog summarize the origins and growth of the collection and the family members who contributed to it, with brief descriptions of the main components. Among the types of documents included are letters, periodicals and journal articles, album leaves and greeting cards, books, music manuscripts, notes and copies of texts, pictures, and objects. …
