The Dancer

when you woke up

you had to move forward,

you couldn't turn backwards into the wall

and stay vertical looking at the world

from inside a room.

you had to moan as you bent

to tie hand-weary laces, frayed like hysteria

and move your legs

that knew the invisible footmarks across the floor

where they stride,

where they shuffle from disdain.

Surfers Paradise beach was almost unreal

when you looked at the endless stretch of white sand,

a receding snake-twist

with a tail pointed to Tweed Heads

and beyond where the eye can't strain

the water was fluent when it tumbled

and you could count on your hand

the strolling people without their shoes

tossed over a shirtless shoulder.

but across the road you were cleaning

endless deep in a toilet,

shut off from anything external

and zombie-like in your progress.

who would know that later

when the night crawlers emerged

you would be one of the pack,

elevated even,

dressed in your costume

with its overlapped sequins, sparkling scales

and beads

intended to hypnotise the unsuspecting eye. …
