CONTENTS: "Botschaft," "Dein blaues Auge," "Die Mainacht," "Feldeinsamkeit," "Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer," "Meine Liebe ist grün," "Mondnacht," "O liebliche Wangen," "O wüsst ich doch den Weg zurück," "Sapphische Ode," "Sonntag," "Ständchen," "Vergebliches Ständchen," "Von ewiger Liebe," and "Wie Melodien zieht es mir."

These fifteen songs by Brahms are representative of his compositional style and are among his best known songs. If a singer could choose only a handful of Brahms songs to know thoroughly, these certainly would make the list. Moreover, the learning tools included in these volumes leave little excuse not to learn the songs other than lack of suitability for a particular voice, or simply lack of talent.

Richard Walters's biography of the composer gives insight into the composer's life and work, and the Table of IPA symbols and IPA transcription of each German text, along with a word by word translation, present ample help to the student approaching these songs. In addition, at the head of each song is commentary about the poet and the song itself, along with the German poem and a side by side English translation.

Two CDs include three elements for each song: a recitation of the text, a diction lesson, and the song accompaniment. …
