The writing of political histories in chronological order is at present unpopular, but Edmund Bosworth is one of those rare scholars who follow Ranke's dictum that history should be the recording of what actually happened. The author has written much on this period in the history of Iran and is acknowledged as the foremost authority on the Saffarids, the dynasty which arose from plebeian ranks and ruled Sistan for centuries. The present work is based on lectures Bosworth gave at Columbia University and is greatly enlarged with a formidable array of footnotes. The select bibliography comprehensively supplements the footnotes. The maps and tables are also a great aid to the reader. There is little one can add to this encyclopedic treatment of the Saffarid dynasty and their successors, the Nasrids in Sistan, who are called the Maliks of Nimruz in the sources.

One chapter is devoted to the administration and organization of Saffarid domains. One might have wished for more information on this and social questions, for the proliferation of names and political changes is tedious. …
