This book has a long title. Like the book itself, it tries to incorporate a tremendous amount of material. However, the title is relatively clear; the book is less so. The author originally intended to write one long volume but found he had too much material. Thus, the theoretical material was published in 1992, and the measurement material composes the current volume (augmented by considerable theory).

The author proposes his own theory of human behavior, the "psychosemantic process paradigm," applying it specifically to love. Three chapters are devoted to theoretical foundations and six to measurement, all focused on illuminating the author's own approach. However, illumination eludes the reader. The author wants to communicate his ideas to the reader, but the words get in the way. For example, in Chapter 1, the author proposes six forms of theory development, seven content components of a theory, seven utilization functions, and seven criteria for evaluating a theory--all this in a 20-page chapter. …
