Guitarists Jim Hall and Bill Frisell are both giants in their discipline, though they have tended over their careers to move in somewhat different circles. Hall made his name as a straight-ahead jazz player who has made well-received forays into Third Wave classical-jazz fusion and the avantgarde, while Frisell made his name as a mainstay of the ECM Records stable while also making significant contributions to New York's forbidding downtown avantrock scene before moving deeper and deeper into a personal interpretation of country and Americana sounds. Both have reputations as kind and generous men, characteristics that have always come out in their playing and that make this duo recording session long overdue. This twodisc package features one disc of guitar duets and one of quartet recordings made with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Joey Baron. The duets are a mix of freely improvised pieces, jazz standards and original compositions, and they are all quite brilliant. …
