Twenty-five years ago in Nashville, at what was the last meeting of the Southern American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, Jim Webb stood before an authence of approximately 25 academics and proclaimed," Let's start our own organization" and that was the beginning of the American Real Estate Society (ARES). The original constitution and bylaws of ARES were drafted by Jim. At the first ARES Annual Meeting at a scruffy Holiday Inn in Denver in October, 1985, Jim organized and cajoled me pioneer members of ARES. He was me Society's second President, the first and long-serving Executive Director and me Director of Development. He began the ARES Foundation, an organization dedicated to assisting doctoral students and academics throughout the world, and served as its Executive Director for many years. Jim helped found me sister societies of ARES and academic journals all over the globe, as well as the International Real Estate Society of which he was President. …
