Translator's Preface

These papers were first published in German in a 1998 supplementary volume to the Internationale Kirchliche Zeitschrift, under the title Bild Christi and Geschlecht: "Gemeinsame Uberlegungen" and Referate der Orthodox-Altkatholischen Konsultation zur Stellung der Frau in der Kirche and zur Frauenordination als okumenischem Problem. A coincidence of several factors led to my involvement with this English-language version. These are a long-standing fascination with Eastern Orthodox thought and practice; a debt of gratitude to the Old Catholic parish of Stuttgart where, along with my wife Fiona and son Isaac, I was a member of the "English" congregation from 1983 to 1986; an (admittedly very peripheral) involvement in the moves towards the ordination of women in my own church, the Anglican Church of Australia; and--as is so often the case in sparking a piece of academic work--a fortuitous conversation. It was from Prof. Robert Wright of the General Theological Seminary, New York, that I learned of the consultations between Orthodox and Old Catholic scholars about women's ordination, and of the pressing need for an Englishlanguage translation of the proceedings.
