Congregations around the world have been singing the hymns of Fanny Crosby for over a century, and the popularity of these songs continues. As a new look at the broader theology of Crosby's hymns, this is a clear and helpful volume, with the hymns arranged in categories for the liturgical year (Advent and Christmas, Easter) and sequence in the worship service (Call to Worship, Preface to Scripture Reading, Holy Communion) as well as themes of the Christian life where most of Crosby's more familiar texts usually reside. Ten of the twenty-six hymns in this collection are the familiar pairings of text and tune: "Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross," "I am Thine, O Lord," "Blessed Assurance," "Rescue the Perishing," "To God be the Glory." The main interest of the collection, however, are the previously unpublished texts set to new tunes by composers from around the world, and the choral arrangements of ten of the hymns (both old and new tunes) .

The international composers will be familiar to many: Patrick Matsikenryiri (Zimbabwe), Simei Monteiro (Brazil), Lim Swee Hong (Singapore), Per Harling (Sweden), and George Mulrain (Trinidad and Tobago). …
