Richard Rolle: Uncollected Prose and Verse with Related Northern Texts, ed. Ralph Hanna, EETS, os 329 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2007). Ixxvii +233 pp. ISBN 978- 0-19- 923614- 5. £65.00. Ralph Hanna modestly describes this volume as a 'spin off from another project to prepare a descriptive catalogue of the English manuscripts of Richard Rolle. He also hopes to fill in gaps which he perceives in other editions of Rolle 's works, and from the outset this volume defines itself in opposition to Sarah Ogilvie -Thomson's Richard Rolle Prose and Verse also published in the EETS series (1988). Hanna complains about the marginalisation of a number of Rolle 's texts which did not appear in Ogilvie-Thomson's edition, and about the linguistically misrepresentative effect of her non-Northern base manuscript. His own assemblage of a dosen texts comprises both re-edited and newly edited material. Each text presents slightly different problems and requires different editorial treatment, which means that altogether this volume constitutes something of a casebook of editorial practice. The twenty manuscript descriptions are succinct and follow a standard pattern, but are nonetheless full of useful information; I spotted one typo in this section: 'Lincsolnshire' (p liv). …
