Le Roman de Thèbes: Edition bilingue, ed. and trans. Aimé Petit, Champion Classiques Moyen Âge 25 (Paris: Champion, 2008). 676 pp. ISBN 978-2-745 3-1 73 1-5. euro17.00. The importance of the Roman de Thèbes- the least known perhaps of the romans d antiquité- is clear from the number of times it has been previously published: originally in 1 8 90 (SATF) by Leopold Constans, and more recently, in paperback, by Raynaud de Lage in 1 966-8 (CFMA), and by Francine Mora-Lebrun in 1995 (Lettres Gothiques). Only the last, based on MS S (BL Add. 341 14), is still in print: the present edition is based on C (BnF 375), which diverges considerably, from a linguistic and stylistic point of view, from the older S. Aimé Petit gives us what looks like a very accurate edition of MS C, with facing-page translation (and a short list of variants and corrections) - which again looks very accurate, and readable. …
