La Passion de saint André, ed. This drama belongs to a large collection of religious plays from the Dauphiné and Savoie. The Briançonnais region, where this play, among others, was first given in 1512 or 1513, was a centre of urban activity, and these religious dramas were, at the same time, edifying entertainment and acts of devotion, accompanied by processions and religious offices. They were financed by a tax levied on the populace or by contributions which came from the actors themselves, who paid a higher fee according to the importance of their role.

The volume consists of a critical edition based on the original manuscript, but using the first edition by the Abbé Fazy (1883) for a check on the readings of the manuscript, given the deterioration since then. A second section is devoted first to the language of the Alpine mystery plays, situating it and also modern Briançonnais in the general Occitan context and the Gallo-Romance group. …
