Combined two volumes ISBN 978- 2- 600- 01 133-4. euro129.03. The publication of Roussineau 's edition of Book I of Perceforest is very welcome news. Although the first part of Book I has long been available in the 1979 edition (also published by Dros) of Jane Taylor, the second half of Book I had previously been accessible only in manuscripts or in the sixteenth -century printed edition. Needless to say, it is a considerable aid to the study of this fascinating text to be able to access its first four books in modern critical edition, without any gaps. One can only hope that the seemingly indefatigable Roussineau will continue with the publication of Books V and VI, bringing the work to completion. Both the scope of the project and the impeccable thoroughness of Roussineau's work are apparent in the sheer sise of the current publication: the text itself runs to 891 pages, with a further 168 pages of variant readings and 159 pages of critical notes. There is also a useful table of proverbial and sententious sayings, as well as two indexes of proper names: one pertaining to the opening section, a translation of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae, and one for the remainder of Book I. …
