Jean Froissart: Chroniques, livre III: Le manuscrit Saint-Vincent de Besançon, ed. Peter F. Ainsworth, with a codicological study by Godfried Croenen, vol. I. Textes littéraires français (Geneva: Dros, 2007). 510 pp. ISBN 978- 2- 600- 01 100-6. euro77.42. Peter Ainsworth is, by now, the specialist in the works of Froissart. The only complete edition, until very recently, was the imperfect one produced by Kervyn de Lettenhove; the edition planned by the Société de l'Histoire de France, in train since 1892, stalled in 1975, part way through book III, and looks unlikely to continue. Meanwhile, Ainsworth has done selective editions of books III and IV for the Lettres Gothiques series, become formidably expert in Froissart's own works and manuscripts, and in the tangled history of the fourteenth century - and above all has directed a string of ambitious and energetic research projects, at Liverpool and Sheffield, culminating now in the On-Line Froissart Project, based in Sheffield, which will eventually put on-line some of the most important of the Froissart manuscripts, and provide the sort of marked-up searchable text and images which should transform Froissart scholarship and be a model for on-line medieval scholarship. …
