La Ve seint Marcel de Lymoges is an important text in the history of French hagiographical prose. Its 1,506 lines, divided into thirty-seven chapters, tell the story of an apostolic saint, St Martial, founder of the Limoges bishopric. St Peter sends Martial to Limoges in order to convert the pagans, and tales of miraculous healings, exorcisms, spectacular resurrections, and other miracles attributed to the saint follow. At the end of his life (and indeed the life) Martial's place in heaven is confirmed. The author of this work is Wauchier de Denain, well known for his innovative French prose works. Writing at the beginning of the thirteenth century, he here adapts the Vita sancii Martialis episcopi Lemovicensis, plausibly attributed to Ademar de Chabannes, monk at the abbey of St Martial in the 1 020s. This is the first edition of the Old French text (from Paris, BnF, f. fr. 412), preceded by a relatively brief but extremely informative linguistic and contextual introduction. …
