Gautier de Coinci is an author whose reputation is very much on the rise as the modern scholarly community becomes increasingly aware of his genius. This book complements the translator's earlier study (Champion, 1988), adding a relatively literal modern French line-by-line translation of Koenig's edition (TLF, 1966). The translation benefits from this conservative approach, providing those interested in Virgin Miracles who are uncomfortable reading in the original Old French, but able to read Modern French, with an accessible and reliable version of Gautier's longest tale. The story is rightly described by the translator as having the nature of a roman c? aventure and it is this, along with versions in parallel traditions, that contributes a great deal to its appeal. The introduction to the translation seems based largely on the translator's earlier essay. It offers commentaries on context, characters, and sources, but loses sight rather of the purpose of the present book: examples and quotations are given in Old French, with no accompanying Modern French translation. …
