Guillaume de Digulleville: Les pèlerinages allégoriques: Colloque de Cérisy, ed. Frédéric Duval and Fabienne PomeL Collection 'Interférences' (Rennes: Presses Universitaires de Rennes, 2008). 486 pp. ISBN 978-2-7535-0593-3. euro24.00. This collection of seventeen papers makes a welcome and valuable contribution to our knowledge of an important but neglected author of fourteenth-century France. The very extent of de Deguileville's considerable poetic corpus has, until quite recently, condemned him to neglect by modern scholarship. But in his own day Guillaume 's three poems (the Pèlerinage de vie humaine, de l'âme, and de Jésus Crist) were enormously popular. The opening articles (by Maupeu, Braet, and Spica) set the poems within the context of secular allegorical literature, especially the Roman de la Rose. Important religions questions - images of penance (D robins ky), prayers (Hue), the trial of paradise (JLe Bouteiller), depiction of purgatory and hell (Cavagna) - form the second section. The article by Duval includes editions of two hitherto unedited Latin poems. There is an examination from a historian's point of view (Lallouette) of the portrayal of Old Age in the Pèlerinage de vie humaine, while three other contributors (Matsumuta, Stumpf, Roques) tackle lexicographical problems. …
