is camping with his daughters,

two fifteen year olds running feral

through the trees and tents of a folk music festival.

His wife has told him

he should go camping,

take as long as he wants,

it's Christmas

visit his mother as well

why not?

It's the last time he'll have them anyway

before she takes them

queen in two moves to check

mate

to a new and exciting place in the city.

The man whose wife has told him to leave

is playing guitar with a pickup group

he's shaved off his beard

so his face is red in the camp fire

with what looks like embarrassment.

Chin folds ripple his skin.

He's drinking cheap chardonnay,

one that donates money to wild life

or, funny rats, as someone says,

so he tries his own joke about the accordion

sounding like a woman in childbirth,

but no one laughs

and the group turns to the music. …
