Boot prints crisscross, oyster-catchers

in the shallows keep their activities

distant, truants at any approach.

None, all day, will have managed

to get close - not even the horse

and its rider, hoofprints in the sand

made when the sunshine had warmth.

An aeroplane like an inspector,

above the pale ocean, also departs.

There are two people it can see,

late arrivals, shadows pointing east,

but won't notice, as a raptor might,

the eagerness on their faces, the flush.

Only the oyster-catchers retain an interest,

self-interest in a rising tide, make one short

flight after another - from our perspective,

below the plane, comical and needlessly furtive. …
