I first started my administrative career when I took the HDAP course in 1 987 and went to work for the Vice Principal (Curriculum Resources) of City College, Plymouth as his PA, having previously spent ten years with Lloyds Bank PLC. I then gained promotion within the college and became an office manager for one of the faculties. After a four year career break when my son was born, I started my own business - a franchise of Securicor Pony Express, a courier company and, in 1 998, whilst I also worked parttime as a lecturer for the college until 2000 when I went full-time, I studied with the Open University and gained an MBA in September 2006, graduating at Versailles!

Additionally, I taught on the Chartered Management Institute Programmes at the college and introduced the IAM programmes to them as I felt they would be of interest. I joined the IAM in 2006 and sat on the Edcom Committee reviewing the suite of IAM qualifications. David Woodgate, former CEO, IAM and I were instrumental in the conception of the IAM Foundation Degree which is being run at the college as part of our Higher Education Faculty and there are currently 1 2 learners on the full-time and part-time provision.

I am passionate about the IAM qualifications because I feel that administration is often done so well by the people who do it, that it is seen as an easy role which often does not command a salary which reflects the expertise required. …
