Conrad to Mr Hughes: A New Letter of 1924

Article excerpt

THE SHORT LETTER to "Mr Hughes" published here, unknown at the time of the publication of the final volume of The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad, Volume 9: Uncollected Letters and Indexes in December 2007, is preserved as a framed item in the Gail and Stephen Rudin Autograph Collection, 1841-1993 (Collection No. 4690) in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of the Carl A. Kroch Library at Cornell University Library.

Given the commonness of his surname, this correspondent - a "fellow seaman" of the "new generation" - seems destined forever to remain a mystery, like some of the other occasional admirers who wrote to Conrad. It is likewise impossible to determine which of the writer's works may have prompted Mr Hughes's note, although Conrad's reference to "the successive ships" of his career inevitably suggests The Mirror of the Sea (1906).
