This special issue of the European Journal of Tourism Research presents a selection of the best papers presented at the conference on "Island Tourism Destination Image, Competitiveness and other Topics" held in Azores Islands on 14th November 2008 at University of Azores, organized by the Observatório do Turismo dos Açores. Twelve papers were presented by leading researchers in tourism, from which five were selected based in their quality and implication for policy.

The selected papers analyse a variety of important problems and issues associated with tourism and related to the conference topic.

The first paper written by Laurent Botti, Nicolas Peypoch, Elizabeth Robinot and Bernardin Solonadrasana assess and compare tourism destinations in terms of their performance, using the Directional Distance Function applied to the evaluation of the twenty-two French tourism regions. The general conclusion is that there is room for adjustment in 12 French tourism regions in order to achieve best-practice procedures. These regions should adopt procedures that induce greater efficiency, in following the example of efficient peers identified in the study.

The second paper Marta Fernández-Barcala, Manuel González-Díaz and Juan Prieto-Rodriguez present to analyse factors influencing the service quality appraisals left by hotel guests on Tripadvisor website. The results confirm that the price and the hotel star category negatively affect quality assessments, which suggest that ex ante expectations are essential factors in the ex post evaluation. …
