This guide will make you think and anyone looking for a good college should be made to think about what they are doing and why. Too many college freshmen enter a four-year institution without a clue as to what they will study or what they will do with that degree for the rest of their lives. I am not suggesting that college students should have it "all figured out" before they even get started or that there is no place for flexibility. I am saying that the Making a Difference Guide is an excellent tool, whereby prospective college students can evaluate a wide selection of schools in an effort to find a good match for their goals, values, and perceived purpose in life. A number of introductory essays facilitate this process. For example, Jeremy Rifkin, author of The End of Work: The Decline of the Global Labor Force & the Dawn of the Post-Market Era, wrote "Rethinking the Mission of American Education." David Orr of Oberlin College wrote "What is Education for?" Other essays focus on the value of community service, environmental literacy, socially responsible technology, and more.
