In 1998, David Devenney published an annotated guide to music theater literature. This revised edition contains almost one hundred more shows than the first version, bringing the total to 300 shows. The catalogue is arranged alphabetically by show title. The annotations include the year of premiere, names of composer(s) and lyricist(s), the songs in the order they appear in the show, the character(s) who sings them, and the voice type of each character. Each entry also contains the range and type of each song (ballad, uptempo, character pieces, or combinations thereof). Only vocal pieces that can be performed in excerpts are included, and no instrumental pieces are annotated.

As valuable as the annotated entries are six indexes. The first lists the songs by vocal classification (soprano, mezzo soprano, tenor, and bass baritone) and by the type of song (ballad, up tempo, or character). There are indexes for duets, trios, quartets, and small ensembles, and choruses and company numbers. …
