The Breviarium de dictamine, also known as the Enchiridion deprosis et de rithmis, of Alberic of Montecassino c. 1030-109 8/9) stands at the beginning of the medieval tradition of artes dictandi. It also occupies a significant place in the context of the remarkable Latin literary production of the Abbey of Montecassino in the second half of the eleventh century, which consists of saints' lives, theology, music, astronomy, and rhetoric, in prose and verse. The Breviarium had a profound influence on later rhetorical writings, such as the Praecepta dictaminum of Adalbertos Samaritanus (in i- i 8) and the Aurea gemma of Henricus Francigena (1 1 1 9-24). …
