This volume, a translation of Matthew Paris's Estoire de seint Aedward le rei, inaugurates a new series, of which Fenster and Wogan-Browne are the editors, aimed at increasing the accessibility of medieval Insular literature in the French vernacular, linguistically inaccessible to many students and scholars of medieval English literature, this large and varied body of texts remains relatively unexplored. The present volume is an admirable start to this laudable undertaking. Fenster and Wogan-Browne provide a survey of previous Lives of Edward the Confessor and their role in the process of canonization, before turning to a detailed consideration of Matthew Paris's text and its ideological import in the context of Henry Ill's vision of kingship and royal government. …
