Éamonn Ó Carragáin is well known for the quantity and quality of his work on the Ruthwell Cross, the Dream of the Rood, and their cultural contexts, which (as he has underlined) stretch from Northumbria to Rome. The twenty-six contributions to this substantial volume echo these interests, exploring topics that range from early medieval Rome (Thacker) through Bede (O'Reilly, G H. Brown) to Old English verse (Szarmach, Biggs, Magennis, Stanley, Orchard, and Roberts) and Old Icelandic (Dance); then on via Insular Gospel-books (M. P. Brown, Farr) and Anglo-Saxon manuscripts (Parkes, Karkov, Treharne) to Anglo-Saxon crosses (Hawkes, Neuman de Vegvar, Bailey), early medieval iconography (Fadda, Wright, Henderson), textiles (Coastworth), and Irish sacred topography (Whitfield, Ryan, Okasha). From a strong collection understandably dominated by readings (more or less speculative as the case may be) of verbal and visual imagery, certain chapters stand out by dint of their cogency, insight, or wider interest These include: Thacker's survey of the development of martyr cults within the walls of Rome in the early Middle Ages; Wright's meticulous analysis of the significance of the foliate stems held by the figure depicted on the Alfred Jewel; Coatsworth's classification by function of the inscriptions incorporated in early medieval textiles; Treharne's articulation of the logic and normality of the material assembled in the Vercelli Book; G. …
