Gina Greco and Christine Rose offer here a highly readable translation of a late fourteenth-century guide to wifely duties and estate management Its contents range from practical advice about such matters as menu-planning, housekeeping and gardening, and the management of servants, to expositions of the conduct befitting a wife, illustrated by numerous narrative exempla. The authors admit to having eliminated 'repetitive language' in one such set-piece, the Chemin depovreté et de richesse (p. 45), as well as reducing the use of 'doublets' throughout the text, often employing a single term for the pair of synonyms used by the medieval author. …
