This congress, organized by Giosuè Lachin and Francesco Zambón, and supported by the Società Italiana di Filologia Romanza and the Association Internationale d'Études Occitanes, is a further proof of the vitality, in Italy, of the fields represented by the two sponsoring societies. As the tide reveals, the centre of attention is the spread of troubadour poetry and its culture in the last quarter of the twelfth century, in Italy and, in particular, in the Veneto. Northern Italian poets, such as Bonifacio Calvo and Lanfranco Cigala from the earliest period, to those of the later group, including Sordello and Bartolomeo Zorzi, wrote in Occitan. Further, many of the troubadour songbooks have their origins in die north of Italy and, maximally, in the Veneto. This concentration of talent and activity was to be decisive not merely for history of Italian literature, but also for modern European poetry, a fact not always appreciated outside the field of Occitan studies. …
