Towards a Collaborative Environmental Research Agenda is a collection of presentations under the umbrella of a seminar series at the University of Bath called 'Towards an environmental research agenda'.While not the snappiest of titles, the calibre of presentations and range of subject matter make a useful contribution to certain important environmental issues. As a book, Warhurst's collection is the expected curate's egg, the natural product of a diverse range of subjects and styles. However, some notable contributions stand out.

One is Geoff rey Hammond piece on energy and the environment. Hammond gives a useful overview, which helps us to understand one of the most important in Puences on the planet. The chapter would have been even better if he could have explained the future eects of the hydrogen economy and the ultimate need for reliance on solar power to achieve a sustainable future. Chapter 3 which describes a study of energy use in Bath is a good companion to the energy debate put forward by Hammond.

Readers fairly new to the sustainability agenda will benefit from Chapters 1, 2 and 4. These cover the importance of environmental protection and social responsibility to sustainable development.

Warhurst's chapter (Chapter 7) on the need to move regulation from the 'polluter pays' assumption to a more proactive pollution prevention regime shows how one sector (metals mining and refining) is investing in upstream as opposed to 'end-of-pipe' waste solutions. …
