The book was originally published in 2000, shortly before the controversial presidential election that left George W. Bush in the White House. The aim of the author was to describe the efforts of the USA to define a 'new world order' (the phrase of the first President Bush) following the collapse of the Soviet Union, an order that was based not only on political and military power but also on processes of globalisation and the spread of US economic ideas throughout the world. The title of the book was inspired by a debate during the Second World War between the media magnate Henry Luce and Franklin Roosevelt's Vice- President, Henry Wallace. Luce emphasised the potential of the USA to shape the world and the twentieth century in its own image. Vice-President Wallace engaged with this vision and considered the 'American century' to be that of the common man. During the 1990s, talk of the 'American century' became rather muted, but the presidency of George W. Bush introduced it to a broader audience. The book presents a powerful analysis that critically assesses a full range of US foreign policies, considering their economic, diplomatic and military dimensions. The author raises fundamental questions.

The first four chapters of the book deal with various aspects of the USA's power and influence in the 1990s. Chapter 1 examines the role of the USA in the world economy since 1945, and emphasises the efforts of US policy-makers to promote a particular vision of free-market economics in the 1980s and 1990s. …
